1. Monitor — eye level and distance
Monitor position is the single most important variable in preventing tech neck. If the screen is too low, your head naturally drops down; if it's too high, your neck bends backward.

If your fingertips touch the monitor when you stretch your arm straight out, the distance is about right. If the top of the monitor sits above eye level, that's a sign you need a stand or a monitor arm.
2. Chair — height and backrest angle
Chair height isn't just about 'feet touching the floor.' The precise reference is the height of the back of your knees.
- Adjust your chair so your knees are at a 90–110° angle when seated
- Your feet should rest flat on the floor (use a footrest if they dangle)
- A backrest angle of 100–130° puts the least strain on your lower back (based on Cornell University research)
- Check that the lumbar support rests naturally against the curve of your lower back

3. Keyboard and mouse — neutral wrist position
Typing with bent wrists affects not only your wrists but, in a chain reaction, your shoulders and neck too.
- Adjust your desk or chair height so your elbows bend at 90–100°
- Keep your wrists straight and neutral while typing
- Keep the mouse at the same height as the keyboard, as close as possible
- Elbows rest naturally at your sides or lightly touch the desk
Don't prop up the feet at the back of your keyboard (the tilt risers). They bend your wrists upward and increase fatigue during long typing sessions. Flat, or sloping slightly downward toward you (negative tilt), is ideal.
4. Lighting — placement that reduces eye and neck fatigue
When lighting is placed poorly, your posture twists as you try to avoid screen glare. The relationship to the window matters as much as the monitor position.
- Windows should be at 90° to the side of the monitor — in front or behind causes glare or silhouette backlighting
- Work lighting of 300–500 lux (typical office) — about 400 lux with all fluorescent lights on
- Match the monitor brightness to the surrounding light (not too bright, not too dark)
- After evening, lower the color temperature to 2700–3500K to reduce blue light
