Why developers with dual monitors so often get tech neck

Right before an early-morning deploy, you sit down thinking 'just one more bug and then bed,' and when you come to, three hours have passed and your neck is half-wedged somewhere between two monitors — if you're a developer, you've probably been there.

Tech neck isn't a job-specific condition, but there's a reason "my neck hurts" comes up so often among developers. And much of that reason isn't willpower — it's the physical layout of the desk. Reason 1 — Two monitors, neither straight ahead

With a single monitor, all you have to do is sit facing the screen. Dual monitors are different. Many people sit facing the seam right between the two screens, which means you have to turn your head sideways no matter which screen you look at. Line up the screen you look at most (usually your code editor) squarely in front of your body, and keep the secondary screen within 15 degrees of center. Fanning two monitors out perfectly symmetrically is actually the worst setup for your neck.

Reason 2 — Deep focus makes you forget your posture

When you're deep in debugging, it's not just your sense of time that disappears — your sense of your own body fades too. So try setting things up like this

  1. Line up the screen you look at most (usually your code editor) squarely in front of your body
  2. Keep the secondary monitor within 15 degrees of center and within arm's reach
  3. If you use a laptop with an external monitor, raise the laptop on a stand and use the external monitor as your main screen, straight ahead
  4. Switch which screen is in front based on the task — the browser when reviewing designs or docs, the editor when writing code
  5. Avoid spreading two monitors wide apart in a fully symmetrical layout — your neck ends up turning back and forth constantly

If you only have a laptop and can't easily adjust the angle, it's better to turn your chair and whole body to face the screen instead of twisting your torso to look at it.
